Magical Mistakes

My Opinion

I think the biggest tragedy of all was the fact that Scholastic changed the title of the first book and changed some of the text in this series. Were Roald Dahl's books changed? No. Were the Brian Jacques' Redwall series changed? No. Shakespeare? Any other British novels? I think not.

Why in the world did they take the idioms and cultural aspects out of this terrific series? To enjoy another culture and pronunciations of the English language is delicious! It adds flavour to the story -- and they took it out of the American publications. :(

The Canadian publisher, Raincoast, didn't alter the original versions.

Canadian edition British edition American edition

If there are no flags beside the magical mistakes, they appeared in all editions.

Book 1 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

pg 52&pg168: The text book he must have is called One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore. While studying, he looks up 'Dittany' in One Hundred Magical Herbs and Fungi

pg 53: Other Equipment

1 wand
1 cauldron (pewter, standard size 2)
1 set glass or crystal phials
1 telescope
1 set brass scales
1 wand it is listed twice

Also,

Students may also bring an owl OR a cat OR a toad. Ron brings a rat.??

pg 91: The book says that after Harry was sorted there were three people remaining: Turpin, Lisa, Weasley, Ron and Zambini, Blaise. What happened to Thomas, Dean??? There were really four people remaining to be sorted.

Book 2 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

pg 32: Mrs. Weasley says to Fred "You're going to de-gnome the garden for me, they're getting completely out of hand again." "Oh, Mum--" "And you two," she said, glaring at Ron and Fred. (I think it should have been Ron and George)

pg 36: "tomorrow, Tuesday was Harry's eleventh birthday." In 1991, July 31st fell on a Wednesday.

pg 245: Dumbledore says Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. It should say the last remaining descendant of S.S.

pg 92: In the first book Nearly-Headless-Nick says he didn't eat for almost 400 years. pg 99: In the second book he is celebrating 500 years from his deathday. So, did he eat for the first 100 years???

Book 3 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

pg 7: In the book, Harry is reading a large leather-bound book (A History of Magic, by Bathilda Bagshot). In the book on tape, read by Stephen Fry, he says A History of Magic, by Adlebert Waffling.
pg 136: In the first book, Marcus Flint is in his 6th year at Hogwarts. pg 225: Flint is still there playing Quidditch! That should make him ....year 9??

pg 263, Snape tells Harry, Ron, Hermione, Lupin, and Black that he knew they were there because, he saw "them running along this passage and out of sight" on the Marauder's map. Later, Harry and Hermione go back 3 hours in time. Wouldn't Snape have seen Harry and Hermione in two places on the map? This is a paradox.

A mistake in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE occurred when it was released in July 2000. The mistake appears in a passage late in the book (page 579 FIRST British version; page 667 FIRST American version), during Harry's dramatic encounter with the
dark wizard Lord Voldemort.
In this scene, Harry sees the ghosts of his parents (murdered by Voldemort when Harry was just a baby) emerge from Voldemort's wand --- father James Potter first, then Lily Potter.
The ghosts of Voldemort's victims are supposed to emerge from his wand in the reverse order they were killed, and you know that James Potter was killed before his wife.

Book 4 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

pg 256 In his letter to Sirius, Harry writes "I don't * who put my name in the Goblet of Fire" -- missing the word "know"

***Both Scholastic (Rowling's U.S. publisher) and Bloomsbury (her publisher in the U.K.) made the same correction in later printings of the book.***

Judy Corman, a spokesperson for Scholastic stated "It was a case of human error"

SO ... depending on which PRINTING you have....it may be right or it may be wrong.
